Card Warp and the Seven Year Itch

Get ready for seven years worth of too much information crammed into an autobiographical note concerning this last week or as I call it, card warp and the seven year itch. Like the media wanting their next boldly ironic story, I’ve got an itch to scratch.

While waiting on my prescription at the Howard Brown Center I noticed a peculiar man speaking at the desk, “Tell them they have to call [the day before] to remind me about my next [therapy] appointment.” Here I sit; here he comes. His name is Duffen. “You want to see a magic trick?” I answer, “sure.” He says something like, betcha this doesn’t happen often, to which I reply, “Actually, this is probably about the third or fourth time in the last year that a complete stranger has walked up and offered to show me a trick.”

Anthony Weiner's business is blown out of proportion.

With all the spectacle in the news this week, I can’t help but wonder how a little, humble life like mine fits into such a highly regarded tapestry. I mean, with all the important news taking spotlight such as the Sarah Palin/Paul Revere tour and Anthony Weiner’s Weener being slung around how can any headlines hope to compete?

I shan’t even try but nonetheless, following Weiner’s style I feel compelled to put it out there. Last week on Wednesday before winding up at Howard Brown, I decided to do a little two birds with one stone investigating. Shortly after my 30th birthday I got an awful itch under my skin, quite literally. At first, this rash was small and mostly on one side of my stomach but after about a week it started claiming its territory. I rationalized, considering all truths and possibilities inluding the common heat rash, shingles, reviewed images and descriptions of STI’s, you know, enjoyable homework. More than anything, this break out made me recall a previous trip to the medical center when I attended the University of Memphis. My body had had an allergic reaction to a new detergent; however, I didn’t know this and neither did my practicioner.

What is the next target for the Palin tour?

Palin's next tour target impossible to determine.

During the gunpoint examination I was asked a number of questions regarding my behaviors one of which concerned “recently changed detergent” to which I answered yes. Yet, the question of obvious gravity came up after I was aksed, “Are you sexually active?” “Yes I am.” Responding openly and honestly to “with men or with women” changed the entire disposition of the clip-board lady in question. “With men,” I answered. “Oh,” her face dropped noticeably “well, have you been tested for HIV?” My heart stopped as if at gunpoint. “No,” I replied very stricken with newfound doubt. I had been pretty promiscous from my own understanding of partner count but I also read enough to know about then “safe sex” and considered myself at low to minimal risk. Long story short, convinced by her severity I got an HIV test which the lab somehow lost leaving me in two very dark weeks. I wasn’t one to miss class and yet during this time I truly believed they had my results, I was positive and they didn’t want to break the news. At the lowest point, I was bedridden for three days only getting up to vomit and occassionally eat a saltine cracker or two which was all I could keep down. Managing to make it in to see the dean, Bob Heatherington and explain my absense, he offered comforting counsel and a friend’s number who was living with HIV. Thank you for that moment Bob. Finally, I got the call to “come in” and I knew that was it. A nurse delivered the news, “you’re o.k.” and I immediately collapsed into tears while she held my head pressed against her stomach. In the end, my mind made me sick. Now, back to the investigation.

Originally I had made an appointment with a local clinic while a gracious receptionist told me about a GLBT youth resource that would see me for free. Thinking back to my college days lead me to check this place out. Typically, they only see people under 25 years old but thankfully I took a suggestion to lie about my age. The practicioner was a lovely, friendly woman and the place ran rather well from what I could tell. When I got in the room, I sat and explained I had diagnosed myself with scabies or Sarcoptes scabiei, occasionally and colloquially called the seven year itch. She listened as I explained my symptoms, all of which lined up with my theory with the exception of the non-linear lines of what I perceived as “bites.” We agreed it best to test for syphillius and gonerhea, chlamydia and HIV while I was there (as I typically do once a year, since the first scare). Permethrin was prescribed and off I went to Howard Brown.

“You like that one? That one’s called the card warp,” me new acquaintance explained after having finished a front side back side illusion that left me tickled and pleased. As we waited we got to talking briefly and he shared part of his life including the fact that he had performed for many famous people including Justin Timberlake and Bjork. “She loved my magic and she ate my mash potatoes.” “Wow,” I said, “I just love her music.” “Nick Taylor,” the clerk called. The man gave me his card and we wished one another well and I went on my way to cleaning the carpet, washing the laundry and all the other needed cleansing tasks.

One week has passed and I still feel in the dark. Where the seven year itch is concerned, sometimes two weeks can pass before the symptoms settle. Nonetheless, I feed my own suffering. I wonder if I have been misdiagnosed or if I could have some eczema rash or a mild form of psoriasis caused by heightened levels of stress or, in other words, if once again my mind is making me sick. Much to my dismay, I’ll probably end up with some overpriced medical bill to find out just that. Two weeks will tell. One down, one to go.

We as people continually allow our own shame, guilt, or severe stress to manifest into something that affects our physical body. At least Catholics have confession as some form of self-healing and even our politicians are learning not to lie about their weeners. How do I fit into this week’s news worthy news? Well, I’d call it a transparent fit. While I may not like the fact that so many people subscribe to following Palin around in her Ameripimp Bus it has brought some common sense light into the media. When faced with the truth, Weiner finally admitted to his faults while Palin stood by her remarks that almost all news coverage reveres as laughable.

In this day I want truth. I want to face the truth about what is wrong in my life, what is wrong with our political leaders and what is wrong with our world. In facing these truths we can all see that the “wrong” is simply judgement from our self-imposed status quo. While Weiner’s conduct may not receive applause I doubt it inhibited his performance as a Rep. for New York. And while most know and say Palin “got the story wrong” the more pressing matter is that she failed to own her mistake. The long and short of both these stories is that a man choosing to be honest suffers political attack while a woman embracing flagrant spin gets more attention than she deserves. We witness time and time again people that will not only lie to us but to themselves to avoid an embarrassing reality.

To those who follow politicians blindly, don’t be so rash.

With greater transparency we will all be able to see through these illusions on into the next seven years without an itch to scratch.

DMT The Spirit Molecule

Most people have at least heard of some form of hallucinogen whether it be mushrooms, lysergic acid or peyote but few people have heard of the only endogenous hallucinogenic agent, DMT The Spirit Molecule.

To preface this article with a brief personal account, I have never taken DMT but have had two out-of-body experiences one of which occurred during a period of high stress associated with death. In addition, I have taken psilocybin on three cases one of which can be found in an earlier article (see Snowy Silhouette Skies).

While conservatively dismissed as nothing but time-wasting mind altering substances or “hippie drugs” Rick Strassman, M.D. chronicles supported clinical studies of DMT through rich detail of the drug produced by our own bodies, follows the effects across numerous case studies and speaks to why studies of these and other substances will prove beneficial to the scientific community and to the populace at large.

This book provides documentation concerning the study of near-death and mystical experiences. It does not set out to prove or define life after death but rather records sessions focused on gathering neurological and biological data in addition to case by case testimony.

Divided into six parts, the first of which focuses on “The Building Blocks” and introduces the reader into brief jargon and needed definitions. We find here that all psychedelic drugs are divided into two main families, the phenethylamines and the tryptamines. Dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, belongs to the tryptamine family along with some non-halluncinogenic substances serotonin and tryptamine (an amino acid required for digestion. Among fellow psychedelics psilocybin (found in magic mushrooms), LSD and ibogaine (the drug known to alleviate addictive behavior) rests DMT; it is short-lived but extremely potent and primarily associated with the pineal gland and is released into the body during rare, heightened instances such as birth and death. The drug can also be injected and doing so in a controlled setting was the basis for study over the arc of many individuals during Dr. Strassman’s research. Natural releases or concentrated doses of the drug are often affiliated with interpreted “out-of-body” travels. With now a novice understanding of the spirit molecule we proceed into personal accounts.

Bullets on page 93 detail the doctor’s “dose-response” program and are as follows:

  • Recruit “well-functioning, experienced hallucinogen users” for volunteers;
  • Develop a method to measure DMT in blood
  • Create a new rating scale by which we could access DMT’s psychological effects; and
  • Characterize psychological and physical responses to several doses of DMT.

Part IV is titled “The Sessions.” Working in accordance with FDA and DEA regulations the research began in late 1990 with the first administration to associate guinea pig Philip and onto many volunteer reports. Said reports related events of the consciousness being liberated from the binding body, traveling to far off lands or outer space and encountering other forms of intelligence. Dosage followed controlled amounts either blind or non-blind the latter of which involved informing the recipient if the amount of the drug would be low or high. One classic case centered on the 39-year-old female volunteer, Willow. “Willow’s dawning awareness of a ‘light down below, the world’s light’ also reminds us of one of the last bardos in The Tibetan Book of the Dead. This is the stage in which the soul starts looking for a new body in which to incarnate, sees the lights of the world, and starts its descent” (pg. 226). The overwhelming majority of testimonies elaborate on oneness with the universe, God’s love and a greater sense of being; a shocking number share encounters with the same characters or deities of other life.

Part VI, “What Could and Might Be” discusses the future of psychedelic research. In his brilliant analogy Dr. Strassman relates the brain, as the receiving model of our reality, to a television receiving streams from different channels. DMT and like psychedelics allow us to tune into the other channels, planes of existence or parallel dimensions (recommended read here see Nick’s Picks, The Hidden Reality by Brian Greene). So long as the human mind continues to expand we will dive further down the black hole of uncertainty towards enlightenment. DMT is one of the window opening tools allowing entry into the involvement and research needed to better define our existence outside of the limiting, physical body.

Considering all the intelligent species of our planet the duty of knowing the unknown falls before us and us alone.

Ranting Religulous Review

Bill Maher from Religulous

Bill Maher and an actor playing Jesus

My favorite spoken portamento and a conversation launching film all in one, Religulous left me in stitches with great exchange to boot. This is another hybrid review/inspired rant.

Just last night I watched this with a buddy finding myself screeching with irony induced laughter as only two nights ago I was chuckling to myself writing a quick blurb while waiting on the train at Morse (see Still Here). Tie-ins, coincidences and or miracles such as asking for it to rain only to feel the drops immediately afterward exist from our perspective or in other words, it’s all in how you frame it. There are too many uncanny instances for me to label as simply coincidence but at the same time miracle implies a connotation that just isn’t quite right either. Groping for a word to describe these line-ups, synchronicity works best for me.

Some take offense to Bill Maher’s unapologetic message to the overall institution of organized religion. I do not fall in that lot. While his approach might be abrasive to some it is refreshing to me. Many times I’ve shied away from speaking out against what my family may think or say due to their church heritage and often when voicing reason I was only met with defensive hostility; my guess is a nice suit, preceding reputation and a film crew can help alleviate the confrontation. Along his journey he interviews an Arkansas senator, a “cured,” gay man and casually discusses among Jesus-actor and strangers long-spanning historical similarities of religious deities.

“Foot in mouth,” doesn’t capture the expression on this leader’s face when faced with reason itself. Bill says, “We are now among industrialized modern nations the most religious nation. A recent study found that among 32 countries more people in this country doubted evolution than any other country on that list except I think it was Turkey.” This is astounding. But as Senator Mark Pryor says, “You don’t have to pass an I.Q. test to be in the Senate though.”

Speaking of I.Q. you need not be a genius to see the truth cross between Maher and Pastor John Westcott of Exchange Ministries. I am highly familiar and concerned with the idea to pray-gay-away as it can only do long-term harm to a man’s mind. See the above link to witness how easy it is to be turned around (at least if you are a pastor in an argument).

Holy Land Experience proves a “welcome to our world,” attraction and what a world it is. “We’ve got Krishna… Mithra… Horace…”  and Bill goes on relating these identities to this Jesus-actor who later eloquently lays out an analogy of the holy trinity.

Words are great but figures fascinate. These comparative percentages concerning these U.S. minorities proved illuminating:

  • Jewish-1.4%
  • Black-12.2%
  • Gay-3%
  • NRA-1.3%
  • Non-Religious 16%

At least gays are higher than guns.

Religion can be a bad thing. How many soldiers have went to war for god and country fighting a later unveiled, unjust cause? Belief systems can be good but not by defenestrating logic and certainly not at the cost of life. My god is not better than your god and vice versa. In fact, they are probably the same.

Evolution is an understood, proven, scientific reality that regardless of approval remains true. Homosexuality is not a disease, hence, needs no cure. Numerous similarities exist between many religious deities including Horace, Mithra, Jesus and more. Instead of dismissing such facts, accepting these truths would create a through-line for many cultures/subcultures and ultimately dismantle the war machine fueled by difference in opinion and absurd argument. As I have mentioned and as is a focus of my upcoming one man show I was raised Southern Baptist but through my continuing self-education grew beyond my limited viewpoint. A commendable argument offered from the mouth of Bill Maher lays this out in the fashion of his custom blunt wit.

Balancing full throttle final thoughts delivered by Bill Maher from Megiddo, Israel, my mind falls on my family and how harshly they would receive such a message. For a person who has lived their entire life devoted to instilled idealistic principles, facing these fabrications without an alternative will prove jarring to say the least. I have faced my own religion around 30, Bill Maher has done it later in life and through higher thoughts even you, my dear family, can come to realize religion for what it really is. Religion is an institution that offers a set of beautifully written stories blended with history as a guiding text on which to establish a society, moderate their behaviors and justify opposition towards enemy populations of separate cultures and beliefs. Regardless of any facts set forth in the ancient texts the degree of translations and interpretations applied leave only shades behind which stand political figures that either falsely pronounce “for God and country” (to rally support and vote count) or simply remain in the dark.

To quote George W. Bush, “We are in a conflict between good and evil.” Guess what makes up good and evil; through our belief-inspired actions, we do.

For those who contemplate now as “end times” of an unbeknownst Armageddon please know that by subscribing to this potential prophecy you are helping to create it (that’s a bad thing); for all our sakes, hurry and wake up.
